What we have done to make this site usable by everyone, and what remains to be checked.

Where we stand

A trade site gets used on site, one-handed, in bright sunlight, sometimes by someone with poor sight or who does not use a mouse. A page that resists in those conditions costs the order, and nobody comes back to tell us.

What has been done, and measured

Contrast: every piece of text reaches the 4.5 to 1 ratio required at level AA, including secondary text and areas on a dark background.
Keyboard navigation: the whole journey, from the catalogue to sending a request, works without a mouse, with a skip link at the top of the page.
Touch targets: buttons and links are at least 44 pixels tall, 56 on a phone.
Screen readers: images carry a description, form fields have labels genuinely associated with them, errors are announced and never signalled by colour alone.
A page that holds still: images declare their dimensions, content does not jump while loading.
Without JavaScript: the catalogue can be browsed and a quotation accepted with no script at all.

These points are checked automatically on every change to the site, and the check blocks release if it fails.

What has not been checked yet

No formal audit has been carried out, neither RGAA nor WCAG, and there is no declaration of conformity. The checks above are automated: they catch a great deal, not everything. A real test with a screen reader, run by someone who uses one every day, is still outstanding.

We would rather write that down than display a conformity rate nothing supports.
